Since we attended a press preview over the summer, we have wanted to see Hotel Transylvania so much that I maneuvered my not quite 3 year old with my broken arm and and no stroller through New York City after school. (I should also add this is the fourth movie I’ve attended in the span of one week so if it was anything else, I would have skipped it)
Prior to the screening event at Sony, we continued our after-school ritual of eating ice cream and then we hung out at FAO Schwartz. Our afternoon was off to such a fun start.
There are so many clever details in the film including a “Happy Birthday Mavis” sign made out of spider webs, do not disturb heads hanging on each door.
Dracula tells Mavis, “You are old enough to drive a hearst, you are old enough to go out.”
I appreciated all the modern day pop culture references. Mavis wears dark, trendy nail polish and red hi-top converse. Dracula thinks Jonathan’s iPod is a torture device or will erase his memory. Jonathan doesn’t want to be killed because he “has tickets to six Dave Matthews concerts.) He pulls out his Razor scooter to liven up charades. He eats energy bars and explains to Dracula what contact lenses are. He watches a vampire movie (probably Twilight)
The overall theme is a parent will do anything to keep their child safe yet children need to discover stuff for themselves. “They’ll stumble and fall, but such is life.”
It’s a great mood to get you in the mood for Halloween next month.
Feature the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and David Spade, it’s highly entertaining. Even the end credits rock. We give it a high 5.
