My Senior year of high school I joined a gym so I could wear cute work-out clothes. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Slowly I found a groove on the stationary bike and the rowing machine. I also began dating a personal trainer law student. I became gung-ho and drove straight to the gym immediately following school almost daily.
As into the routine I was is how quickly it faded once I went away to college. So instead of biking 15 miles and doing 15+ minutes on the row machine, I gained the Freshman 15. Fast forward to 14 months ago when a friend got me to try a camped FlyWheel class. Since December I have been powering up monthly! This month I was able to get to 1500 while attending less and also with 10 more days to the month. I’ve wanted to add something else to my work-out schedule but am extremely selective with how and why I’ll break into a good sweat.
I started overhearing locker room chatter about row classes, specifically Row House. I was intrigued and eager to try this extremely efficient exercise. I was able to carve out sometime when I had my sitter to try a total body class at Row House Chelsea on Tuesday. I appreciate that it was designed by a multi-tasking, baby juggling, time challenged married couple/fitness industry leaders.
Long-recognized by serious athletes as one of the most effective forms of full-body exercise, rowing offers: low impact exercise, low risk of injury, high caloric burn, increased core and overall body strength, cardio conditioning, weight loss, increased mental clarity, focus, movement consciousness, scalability, and progress tracking.
Most of the participants in the class were newbie like me. A few had rowed a few times before. Unlike spinning which was extremely challenging and above my current level, rowing came back to me almost immediately.(I am also in much better shape trying this activity as I’ve been doing FlyWheel for 14 months now four times a week.)
I am extremely uncoordinated which is the main reason I prefer working out on a piece of machinery. I have disliked every yoga class I have tried and have no desire to try barre. I was out of my element and disliked the varied intervals on the floor that were interspersed during the rowing. From now on, I will attend the RH Express 35 which is a 35 minute class only on the rowing machine.
I completely understand how these classes can get you leaner and stronger. I’m looking forward to rowing again soon. I need to mark my calendar for the upcoming “I Love 80’s” themed evening class. I’ve heard Daley Crawford and Arielle’s classes are not to be missed.
After class, I picked up a nutritious and delicious Spicy C juice at Mania down the street on East 23rd Street, got a manicure and met my husband for lunch. Consciously selecting grilled shrimp with vegetables and beans, I discovered that you can eat Mexican without cheese, chips, margaritas and more cheese.
I did develop a callous below my right ring finger which I’m not sure means I worked hard or I was wasn’t holding the handles correctly.
Next up I will be trying the Fhitting Room.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary class ($25 value) for review purposes, but as always all opinions expressed are 100% my own.
