Life is what’s busy happening while you’re making other plans
Happy New Year! 2014 is a pivotal year for me. I am approaching what I guess is commonly referred to as “middle age.” A number that growing up always seemed so old. But more importantly, age is a state of mind. I rarely focus on my age as a number. I admit that it probably helps that I’ve achieved the milestones I had hoped to by this age. I am happily married and have two beautiful, healthy and happy children. A boy and the little girl I have always dreamed of. One and one and done. Although #2 didn’t come quite as easily as we had hoped. So after two miscarriages and having 2 children under the age of 5, this is the first year in quite awhile where I am no longer focusing on expanding our family or being pregnant.
I am a planner and I am delighted that my calendar is already chock full of entries. Looking ahead, we already have 3 vacations planned between February and August. When I was single, I never wanted to return to the same locale as the world is so vast and there’s endless places to go and things to do and see. But as a parent, I cherish making family traditions and having special rituals. While we won’t be able to return to Winvian for Easter this year, we will be heading back up to Rhode Island for summer vacation before Ian starts kindergarden. It blows my mind that my baby will be starting kindergarden in the fall. But now I’m jumping way ahead. (I have a tendency to do that)
Two of our vacations are booked for the first quarter of the year. All of our trips include our children, but Scott and I have made it a priority to have many more dates for just the two of us. We already have our baby-sitter scheduled for upcoming Saturday nights and reservations at many of the top restaurants of 2013 according to The New York Times.
I’m also making sure to carve out some important ME time separate from my kids and family. I am signed up for yet another writing course at the 92nd Street Y. My husband Scott is very supportive of my hobbies, including scrapbooking. How I dream of one day having a craft area. I have a list of books and authors to read and always welcome suggestions.
I’m also having a blast planning a joint birthday party for Greenlee and myself. In fact, I will definitely need another project after the event happens on May 31st.
What are you & your family looking forward to in 2014?
